What is a goat share?

It is partial ownership of a dairy goat/herd. Owning a share in the goat herd allows you access to raw, unpasteurized milk and other dairy products. You will have a fresh supply of milk, cheese, etc. each week.

How does a goat share work?

Like any other animal, goats require a certain amount of care. To help pay for feeding, milking and general maintenance, there will be a monthly boarding fee. In exchange for this fee, Painted Sky Ranch will board the goat herd, care for it, milk the does and prepare the milk for pickup. You will receive a portion of the milk that the goat herd produces, depending on the type of share you signed up for, that will be available for pick-up at a designated time, day and place.

How much milk can I expect to receive?

We have many types of shares available, i.e., full milk shares, half milk shares, cheese shares, etc. Please see list at bottom of page for share types and prices. A full share of milk will provide approximately 1 gallon of milk per week.

The average lactation period for a goat is 305 days (10 months). We have a strategic breeding schedule that will hopefully allow us to have milk year-round.

I need more than 1 gallon per week. Do you offer additional shares?

You may purchase as many goat shares as needed, as long as they are available. We do not offer discounts on the purchase of multiple shares.

How much does it cost?

Your initial purchase of a goat share(s) is $50.00 per full share or $25 per half share. This is a one-time cost. Once you purchase a share, you need to board it. Boarding fees differ on the type of share purchased. Please remember that the amount of milk that an animal produces may vary. We do limit the amount of shares available, this way we can provide you with a consistent amount.

How do I pay my boarding fee?

Boarding fees are due by the 1st of each month. Your boarding fee should NOT be paid at time of pick-up. No money will be accepted at pick-up time to avoid any confusion that you are "buying" raw milk.

How do I sign up?

Goat shares will not be available until Spring 2011. We will be having an orientation/tasting sometime in early Spring 2011. We will gladly add you to our list and keep you informed of the orientation date.

Can I visit the ranch?

Shareowners are welcome and encouraged to visit the herd. Visiting time is limited due to farm chores, breeding and kidding season. Visitations are by appointment only, weather permitting. An adult MUST accompany children at all times. A representative or employee of Painted Sky Ranch must accompany all visitors due to insurance and safety requirements.

Is there anything else I need to know about raw milk or goat shares?

Any other questions you may have will be answered at the Orientation. You will be given a handout that explains raw milk and the benefits of it, our boarding contract, milk handling procedures and sanitation.
